WirelessTrips.com Campground Review: Jellystone Park at Crystal Lake, Garrattsville, New York

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005 @ 5:50 pm | campground reviews, fall 2005 nostalgia trip, new york

This park is pretty far off I-90, but worth the trip into the back country of New York.

We decided to go “sans sewer” and opt for a water/electric-only site on the campground’s expansive lake. The kids fished (Frank caught a snake), while we worked.

The WiFi coverage was good, with high-gain antennae on both the main office and the bath house. However, the backhaul (what you call the actual connection to the Internet) was satellite. The problem with a satellite backhauls is that the upload speed isn’t much better than dialup. What this means in practical terms is if you try to upload any files, you’ll be waiting a long time. The download speed, on the other hand, is just as good as a land-based line. Fortunately, many people don’t upload large files as often as we do. So the satellite backhaul shouldn’t make a difference in most circumstances.

There was no cell phone coverage of any kind that we could detect.

Aside from the goose crap all over the place (a flock of geese live on the lake), we’d recommend this place.

Three-and-a-half out of five marshmallows.
