When You Can’t Remember Where You Spent the Night…

We left Grandpa and Grandma’s house on Sunday morning and turned east, heading back to Maine, albeit the long way. We won’t be home for another 10 days or so, if nothing happens to interrupt our schedule. I’m sitting here writing this on Tuesday morning and, for the life of me, I can’t remember where we were on Sunday night! That happens sometimes… Hold on. I’ll ask Richard. Oh yeah, that’s right. We were in a town in Indiana that I can’t spell or pronounce, in Amish country. We arrived in the late afternoon. It was raining. It had been raining all day long. We were only going to be there for one day and I really wanted to find one of those excellent Amish buffet restaurants where we could gorge ourselves on a variety of homemade dishes. It was at one of these buffets where I was introduced to pickled beets. I have always detested beets. But, I became addicted to the pickled variety at an Amish buffet in Pennsylvania a couple of years ago. I even planted beets in our garden this year, intent on trying the pickled beets recipe I found in the Amish cookbook I own. Unfortunately, the groundhog ate my beets (along with my corn, my sunflowers, my carrots, my sugar snap peas, my greenbeans, my grapes and my tomatoes). I seem to have gotten WAY off-topic here.

Okay, so when we were checking in, Richard asked the campground owner where the nearest Amish restaurant was. The owner reminded him that it was Sunday, the Amish sabbath. Every Amish business was closed. We were completely out of luck. So, we drove to find a place for dinner while I told Richard and the boys what I’d learned from reading all those Amish novels by Beverly Lewis. The Amish attend church services on Sunday mornings and then visit neighbors and friends the rest of the day. We ended up finding a really great restaurant in Sturgis, Minnesota called Savory. We ate flaming cheese and spinach pie and other homemade goodies. It looked like the restaurant was housed in an old Dairy Queen building, but that the interior looked nothing like a fast food restaurant. We highly recommend the Savory Restaurant if you’re near Sturgis. And, don’t forget dessert! We ordered two pieces of cake and a piece of pie to go. We were far too full from the excellent dinner to squeeze dessert in at that time. We ended up pulling out the dessert and making coffee close to midnight that night, when we were still working.
