We Found Summer!

We had a nice dinner at Harpoon Henry’s Restaurant (Beach Drive and Browning) in North Cape May, New Jersey last night. We were there for sunset and what a show it was! We got some beautiful photos! We then drove around town, but all the shops were closed. Must be off-season. It was pretty chilly again last night.

We got up bright and early this morning, packed up, and drove to the Cape May Ferry. We arrived so early that they let us get on an earlier ferry (we had a 9:30 reservation). They searched the RV, which always makes us feel much safer. The children are now accustomed to strangers with badges boarding the RV and looking everywhere. We’ve explained why it must be done and they don’t mind the interruption at all. The ferry ride was about 80 minutes and it was the nicest ferry we’ve ever been on. It was more like a mini-cruise ship than a ferry.

It got a bit choppy and we enjoyed watching Max try to get his sea legs. He kept stepping back and forth, not really realizing why he was doing it. It was pretty funny. I noticed a large group of men who looked like the kind of guys our son, Zach, hangs out with on the golf course, so I asked if they were golfers. They were and were heading to a few nice courses across the bay. They gave Max a golf ball. Thank goodness he held onto it and didn’t throw it at anyone or in the water.

We saw a school of porpoises and took some more nice photos. We then piled back into the RV, disembarked the ferry, and headed south, down US-9 West and US-13 South, through Maryland and into Virginia.

Just across the Maryland border, we drove out of fall and found summer again! We stopped at the grocery store, stepped out of the RV, said, “Holy Moly!”, and quickly shed our jackets. We had to turn on the air conditioner for the rest of the drive. So, if you’re south of here and wondering when fall is coming, it’s around the Maryland / Virginia border and it’s heading your way!

We got to drive on the huge Chesapeake Bay Bridge and through the two tunnels and the children thought that was really cool. They wanted to know how they make tunnels like that under water, so I think we’ll add that to their homeschooling curriculum next week. Incidentally, a tree next to our RV in New Jersey had a HUGE burl on it that really intrigued the children. Since Frank is studying plants in Science right now, he’s going to study burls, too. His current assignment is dissecting flowers, so we had to buy a bouquet of flowers at the store today. (On a whim, I’d recently purchased a magnifying glass for the children while shopping for the trip and Frank’s current flower project requires a magnifying glass. I must have had a psychic-Mommy-moment.)

We’re now in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It’s cooler outside as evening has arrived and a nice breeze is blowing through the RV windows. Richard and I are working, Max is, once again, playing with his trains, and Ali and Frank just left to do some laundry. We sure are glad we packed some shorts at the bottom of our duffel bags. We’re gonna need ‘em tomorrow!
