Sand Sparks!
We all walked out on the beach after dark tonight to see what Ali and Frank had discovered. If you walk on, jump on, or wiggle your toes in the wet sand after dark, small sparkling green lights shoot outward! We’ve never noticed that phenomenon before nor have we ever heard of it. So, Frank’s science assignment tomorrow is to research the phenomenon online and write a report about it so he can teach all of us what causes it. It was so magical!
He’s also going to write a report about ghost crabs. He and Ali caught more than they could count during our stay here in Cape Hatteras. Those little buggers sure run fast! They’re hard to get on film, but we did get some photos of ones the children caught. They had to keep the crabs away from Max. He’s terrified of them. Can’t really blame him. They skitter right between your legs before you can jump and their claws are pretty intimidating.
It rained this afternoon and we had rolling thunder to entertain us while we were stuck inside the RV. After the storms left and the sun had set, we could still see lightning flashing miles and miles away over the open ocean. And the stars! Words can’t even describe the layers and layers of twinkling lights in the skies. I always forget how many stars you can see when you escape the city lights.
We’re heading even further south early tomorrow morning. We have a long drive and I’ll be spending the day looking out the RV window rather than the looking at my computer screen. It’s supposed to be a beautiful day.
Check in tomorrow to see where we end up!
