Reader Q&A

Q. My hubby and I are thinking about buying an RV for road trips. We did Rt. 66 in a van with our Great Dane a few years ago and loved it. I’d appreciate any tips you might have or resources to check out if you have the time.

Best,
Barb

Angela’s Essential RVing Tips

1. If you buy an actual RV, instead of a trailer to pull with a truck, you can ride IN the RV instead of in the cab of a truck…meaning less potty and food stops.

2. Use one-ply toilet paper to avoid stoppages and don’t travel without a smoke detector. We’ve already had one small electrical fire.

3. Make a pact to laugh when you get lost instead of
letting the driver and navigator get into an argument. You’ll get lost about once a day, but getting lost is when you’ll find unexpected treasures while traveling.

4. Avoid major cities. Take the backroads. This not only
makes the scenery much nicer, but will help you avoid some of the worst traffic jams of your life. (Being from elsewhere, you never know what part of a city’s freeway system gets congested when).

5. Some truck stops have really good “homecooked” food!

6. Get a CB for entertainment (and in case of emergency) when on the road. Some of the conversations between truckers are hilarious and you can always turn it on to see what’s causing a traffic jam you’re stuck in.

7. Get an ipod or satellite radio. Trying to find a good local radio station, while only passing through a town, is very difficult.

8. Do yourself a favor and make any deal possible to get your hubby to take care of all the sewage hook-ups and dumps! I told Richard “it’s a guy thing” and offered to do all the cooking and cleaning if he handled the “Dirty Dump.” Believe me…it’s worth it.
