Oh Boy, We’re in Amboy!
After an extending weekend of visiting family and friends in Racine, WI, we’ve moved on to Amboy, IL - our first stop as we make our way South.
The campground we stayed in was one we’ve reviewed before. The campground has no WiFi, and we remembered it as generally crummy. However it is the only campground within a reasonable distance of the relatives, so we’re stuck with it.
This time around the campground was better. Not sure if they are under different management or not, but many of the sites were updated with new utility boxes. And the park looked a little tidier. Still no WiFi, but the girl at the front desk indicated they would be adding it, and adding cable, for next season.
Like everyone in the country, we watched with baited breath as Hurricane Rita came ashore. We have relatives in both Houston and Corpus Christi - two places that were in the hurricane’s path at some point. In fact, our next major destination is Conroe, TX, which is just north of Houston.
At one point we were contemplating turning back toward home, like last time. But we decided to postpone the decision and head South until we reached Branson, MO, which is the halfway point between Racine and Conroe.
We heard from my mother-in-law this morning - electricity is back on, the gas stations have gas again, and the cost per gallon is still below $3. So we’ve decided to go for it.
An interesting observation we made during all the Rita hoopla - had we stuck to our original itinerary and not headed back to Maine when Katrina hit, we would have been right in the middle of the Rita evactuation panic. So someone was looking out for us, I guess.
Oh, and one other thing we discovered. If you go to this Starbucks and park in the shopping center lot behind it, as close as you can, you can get online without getting out of your RV.
Angie knows she’s way behind on posting photos and will try to get those on the site sometime tomorrow night.
