Made It Back

After 27 hours of straight driving to get home and the holiday weekend to recover, we are pretty much back to normal.

Ironically, gas prices got lower the closer we got to home, but we noticed that many of the highway billboards listing gas prices were just blank - the price was changing so fast that updating the billboards must have been too much of a hassle.

They cheapest we paid was $2.81 per gallon on an Indian reservation that I-86 (in Pennsylvania) runs though.

There were instances of self-imposed imposed rationing in Wisconsin - 10-gallon limit. It would have been bad news if we had found ourselves at such a station. Ten gallons only gets us about 50 miles.

I can’t tell you how disappointed we all were having to cut things short. We were literally within a day’s drive of my mother’s house in Wisconsin, a major destination in the trip. Max was looking forward to seeing his cousin, Ben. And, unfortunately, we had hyped up the visit before all this happened - getting him really excited about it. It is very tough having to disappoint a 4-year-old.

Angie and I did discover that marathon driving isn’t all that bad. She slept in the back while I drove and vice-versa. Having that queen-sized bed to fall into after your shift is over makes a huge difference. We’ll probably incorporate this technique in future trips.

We’re hoping things settle back down in the next month. If that happens, we’ll get back on the road and finish the trip.

In the meantime, we’ll keep the blog alive with campground reviews (we still have three more to report on) and other assorted RV/WiFi/Internet-related info.
