Day 9: Hunt Country Vineyards - A Huge Waste of Time!
Eegads! Leaving upstate New York was a big mistake. We’re in Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio now and it’s about 90 degrees. Ick! That’s a far cry from the chilly nights we had earlier this week when we needed the heater. Before we left this morning, Max had a great time wrestling for Percy’s stuffed frog.

Going to Hunt Country Vineyards in Branchport, New York this morning was a huge waste of time. We drove more than an hour out of our way to that particular winery because their website states, “We offer 1/2 hour tours of our winery every day, by request.” We arrived and snapped a couple of photos of their grapes. We then went inside and heard them telling the person in front of us that there would be “no tours” today. I got pretty upset. We went there so the children could learn about a fascinating process they’d only previously seen on television. We went there so the children could see “several blocks of several grape varieties” and so they could learn about “the annual grape growing and harvesting cycle” and how a “high altitude, steep slope location” helps “produce premier wine grapes.” Yes, that’s all from their website, describing the “tour.” And, besides, Max LOVES grapes! It was all we could do to keep him away from the ones growing by the parking lot.

When it was our turn, I told the man behind the counter that the only reason we came there was to take a tour. He said they only had four people working today and that the others were serving wine tasting customers. Well, I guess it’s more important to cater to the tasters who are there to taste and buy wine than to educate children about their processes. But, we weren’t the only people there asking for a tour, either! And, yes, we were going to buy wine as gifts for friends and family.
We were all extremely disappointed and I feel the statement on their website is false advertising. We’d spent so much time driving to that specific winery at the far end of the lake, and since we had an additional five hour drive to get to Ohio, we had to forego visiting any other wineries and head west. We and the children were deeply disappointed. So, if you go to Lake Keuka, go to another one of the numerous wineries surrounding this lake. And, the lake is gorgeous!
