DAYS 35-40 – Our Last Week in Myrtle Beach (sigh…)
It was kind of depressing on Wednesday. Zach was gone, nobody else was coming to visit us at the beach, and we only had one week left at that beautiful spot right on the Atlantic ocean. Oh, sure, we wanted to get home soon and see our loved ones but we were going to miss the place that had made the worst month of winter the absolute best month of winter! In Maine, we wake up to the sound of traffic. In South Carolina, we were waking up to the sound of crashing waves.
Wednesday is Richard’s busiest day of the week so we usually stay in that day. Boring but necessary. The next day, Max borrowed my camera to take some pictures of several Canada Geese that appear to be wintering at the campground.

The zoom knob had been sticking a bit but would turn if you were gentle with it. Max wasn’t so gentle and…it broke. That was the third Canon SD600 that I’ve lost.
The first and second ones I bought were over $200. The third was a bit less. I was thrilled to find one on ebay, refurbished, of course, for $90 with free shipping! The camera is a really good one, and popular, too. Since I know all the bells and whistles for it, I don’t have to read another boring manual if I just keep buying the same camera. The seller on ebay said he could get it to me before we left South Carolina. Hallelujah! I’m not sure how I’d get by the rest of the trip without a camera!
On Friday, we visited the oldest restaurant in Myrtle Beach. It’s a German one and the entire place has all kinds of stuff stuck to the walls. My view during dinner was a large poster of Princess Diana. I ordered escargot as an appetizer and tried to get Max to eat his first snail. He said he’d do it for ten bucks and I eventually agreed. He put it in his mouth and said, “Mmmm!” But, we could tell he was faking it. He then chewed and chewed (they are kinda chewy), swallowed (without gagging) and held out his hand with a smile, waiting for the cash. Heh…

For dinner, we had sausage, sauerkraut, the works! It was AWESOME!
The next day, Richard took Max and Mason to the park while I worked. Max made two new friends that day – Andi, who is almost 12, and Randy, who is 12. I was surprised by the age difference but all the kids got along great for the entire rest of our stay at that campground! That night, we went to a seafood restaurant that overlooked a waterway. Max took this picture with my phone.

Sunday was a BIG DAY! We moved Max’s training wheels up an inch and he finally believed what we’d been telling him for a few days. He wasn’t really using the training wheels. They weren’t even touching the ground when he rode. However, he still said he wanted to wait “just one more day” to take them off completely. We spent the afternoon at the beach with Andi and Randy. Andi’s dad, Frank, met us out there, too. The kids made a HUGE sand turtle, flew kites, and jumped over the small waves. It was quite chilly but they didn’t seem to mind getting a bit wet. As the sun started to set, our lips started turning blue so we made the kids come inside. We invited Randy, Andi and Frank over for dinner and we ordered pizza. Andi is also homeschooled so she and Max have lots in common. Randy is in regular school and lives at the campground. Some campgrounds have year-round residents so that isn’t at all unusual. He was a very well-mannered and soft-spoken boy and we liked him a lot, too.

We were a bit sad that night because we knew that was our last Sunday in Myrtle Beach.
I’ve posted more pictures of our trip HERE.

Dang it, Ang. If I’d known you were in Myrtle Beach, I’d have driven over. I live in South Carolina, you know. Hate I missed you. Let me know next time you’re in my neck of the woods. Glad you had a nice time. You know we have much better beaches in SC, don’t you?
Hope
ANGELA RESPONDS: Hiya Hope! The campground was perfect for us (diligent security and good wifi) but we are shopping around for a different place next year, just because we like to try different places. We’re thinking we’ll probably head down to Key West next year and then work our way North as the days get warmer. Maybe we’ll see ya then!
