Day 12: Taffy Pull and Mirror Maze in Frankenmuth, Michigan
We lost our Internet connection this afternoon, and decided that was the perfect time to hit the stores in Frankenmuth, Michigan. This small town is beautiful! On the highway 83 (the main street) in town with all the shops, there are flowers everywhere! The landscaping really is quite impressive.
We shopped for chocolate and taffy (we spent $58 on chocolate!!)
and we toured the mirror maze (Max ran into a wall and bumped his head but he’s okay)
and we all had fun making funny faces at ourselves on our way out.
We found a horse store and I bought three Christmas presents for my mom and step dad (who live on a ranch). I’ve been looking for a new sweater because I lost my favorite one last winter and Richard sometimes sets the air conditioner, um, a bit too low in the RV. I was thrilled to discover the Frankenmuth Woolen Mill and Sweater Shop here in Frankenmuth and I found a beautiful new sweater, long and not too thick, which was exactly what I was looking for. And, since it was about 85 degrees outside, the sweater was on sale. I even poked fun at the sales girl, asking her how many people like me come in and buy sweaters when it’s sweltering outside. She admitted with a smile, “Not many!” I told her we’re from Maine and used to buying sweaters year-round.
Percy was very well-behaved in town and didn’t bark at anybody. He left his mark on so many bushes that he got a bit dehydrated. Not to worry. I was carrying a plastic bowl and a bottle of water for him in my backpack. We ate dinner at a brew house after we were shopped out. I thought we might have been burned out on sausage after last night’s splurge but I was wrong. We ordered more. And Max really enjoyed his giant pretzel with brown mustard dipping sauce.
Frankenmuth, Michigan has been one of the major highlights of our trip and we definitely recommend you come here if you have the chance.
We had to change our itinerary slightly today because we learned that one of our planned campground stops no longer has wifi. So, our next stop is now going to be Petoskey, MI. Ali and Frank started school today. They attend a fully accredited private school, Oak Meadow, in Vermont via distance learning (online and via mail). Frank takes his classes online but Ali opted for the print curriculum this year. She still has to type her lessons and submit them via email to her teachers.
I have to get back to work now that we have our Internet connection back. I have to get quite a bit done before I can go to sleep tonight. But, the break this afternoon sure was fun!

I hope you continue to enjoy the beautiful state of Michigan. It is highly underrated and with a bad and undeserved reputation by the media. Northern Michigan and the Petoskey area are very pretty, and Frankenmuth is great. There are many many other wonderful towns, and this is the perfect time of year to be here!
