Chattin’ With Charlie
At the Lookout Mountain Chatttanooga West KOA today, Richard chatted with a retired teacher, Charlie. He and his wife (also a former teacher) have been RVing for awhile but decided to go full-time last year. In May, they sold everything and hit the road with their truck and 5th wheel. They’re history buffs and have been going to different battlefields and trails and taking several days to explore each place.
Late last year, they went to the Grand Canyon and had planned to hike to the bottom. However, they arrived in November and it was already snowed in.
When Richard told him we were homeschooling the children, Charlie said they’ve met several families who, like us, have decided to homeschool their children from the road rather than waiting until retirement to live the life they want to live. He said he even met a group of homeschooling families that was following the Lewis and Clark trail. Their curriculum (math, English, science and history) was tailored to that theme.
They have three grown children, a son who’s a partner in a distributorship in Minnesota, a daughter who’s a research biologist in Washington State and another daughter who’s a homemaker in Chicago. It’s nice that Charlie and his wife can travel all over and visit their children and grandchildren whenever they want.
Richard and I have already told the kids that, no matter where they move someday, they better make sure their driveway is big enough for our RV.
