Change of Plans
We’d planned to stay in Vicksburg, Mississippi for two nights because they supposedly have citywide wi-fi access. However, that wi-fi is extremely limited and certainly wasn’t available citywide. There are three campgrounds in Vicksburg and none of them offered wi-fi access.
We took Exit 1A toward downtown (near the casinos and on the river) and were pretty disappointed. Dumpy is the only word I can use to describe the area near the two casinos that are north of the interstate. It made us wonder how much, if any, of the casino money is being pumped back into that poor town. There were many vacant buildings. Some were even boarded up. It was pretty depressing and Frank even got scared and said he wanted to turn around.
We did, indeed, turn around and head back the way we’d come, exiting a few miles east and checking into the local Hampton Inn, which did have wi-fi access. (They didn’t charge anything extra for Percy!) They recommended Rowdy’s for dinner for some local cuisine. The food was pretty good (I hadn’t had catfish in ages), but our waitress was extremely rude. In fact, our waitress at the local Waffle House this morning was much more friendly.
We toured the battlegrounds and watched the movie at the museum there, which was very educational for the children. We decided we did NOT want to spent another night in Vicksburg, so we took a 4-hour drive south and are now sitting in a campground in Shreveport, LA. I guess we really have put in some miles in the past year…because we only realized after we parked in our spot here that we’ve been to this campground before! We had no idea until we started looking around. We had a chuckle about that.
You can see photos of our Vicksburg trip HERE.
I promised I’d tell you when we found spring and we did indeed find it yesterday! Spring is sitting right about at the Tennessee / Alabama border. That’s where we actually started seeing budding trees and even some wildflowers! It’s downright balmy here in Shreveport and we had to stop and buy a doggie shaver and give Percy a buzz. He’s much happier now, after shedding his Maine winter coat.
Unfortunately, we also found mosquitoes and ants. I got bit twice while shaving Percy and we had to dig into our cabinet for the insect repellent. I only brought one pair of shorts and Frank forgot his sneakers (he only brought his snow boots!) so we stopped and picked up some more seasonal clothing as well.
Tomorrow we’re heading even farther west. I bet you can guess where we’re headin’. Yeehaw!!!
