Campground Review: Association Island RV Resort & Marina - Henderson Harbor, New York
Wi-Fi yes (was spotty for us, but it was new)
Cell phone coverage - yes
We arrived here on Wednesday for a four-night visit. We reserved a spot for four nights based on the fact that they told us theyd have wireless Internet access by the time we arrived. Well, that was not the case. We arrived to no Internet access and very spotty cell phone service. We were in a real pickle as far as getting any work done or even talking to anyone by phone until they moved us to a better spot the following morning. The wi-fi connection did start working on our last day there, but it only worked for a few hours and then went down. The sporadic connection ended up being more trouble than it was worth. Im sure they have the kinks worked out by now. The management was very helpful and kept Richard abreast of the situation. And, the wi-fi service was also very responsive.
This campground is absolutely breathtaking. Im not exaggerating when I say its like walking into a postcard. Its located on an island on Lake Ontario. If you remember to close your doors to the bugs (no biting bugs, just annoying ones), youll have a wonderful stay. The wind blew so hard the last two days of our visit that the bugs didnt have a chance. Max even got windburn while playing outside one afternoon.
We had one bad incident that was not the campgrounds fault. In fact, their quick action is a testament to their caring attitude. While fishing on the childrens pond, a teenager pulled a knife on our son, Frank (age 11), and held it to his throat, threatening him. Frank had accidentally cast his fishing line over the teenagers line. I reported the incident to the office and they took immediate action. Frank and I watched the confrontation between the manager and the teen and it was NOT pretty. The teen was belligerent and obviously had issues with anger management. I had to give credit to the manager. He didnt back down and was not intimidated at all. I, on the other hand, was terrified of that teenager. They finally tracked down his father, who claimed to be a cop and believed his son (who claimed nothing happened). Ali later told us the kid had bragged that his dad was a security guard. So, we know where the kid learned how to lie. Frank has already pretty much dismissed the incident and weve put it behind us. Association Island RV Resort & Marina couldnt have handled the situation any better than they did. We learned a valuable lesson. The children are no longer permitted to talk to anyone bigger or older than themselves, no matter how young or friendly that person may initially appear.
On our first day there, the kids had been fishing at the kids pond using lures. The manager came outside and said, You should really use worms. He then gave them a free box. The kids started catching them as fast as they could bait their hooks. That was a very kind gestureand we purchased many more boxes of worms during our visit.
Our stay at Association Island RV Resort & Marina was very nice and relatively quiet. My only complaints were about the wi-fi access (which, again, should be working by now) and their laundry prices. It was $2 for a wash and $2 for a dry. Thats $4 per load, which is ridiculous. I did four loads of laundry there at a cost of $16. I was pretty upset about that. But, all in all, it was a lovely place. While there were no organized activities (this camp caters to adult travelers), there was plenty of wildlife to keep the children busy. There is a poolbut it was too chilly to swim in that wind!
We give the Association Island RV Resort & Marina in Henderson Harbor, NY four out of five marshmallows.
